Butterfly House
Step 1
Clean green ware and fire to witness cone 04.
Step 2
Base coat butterfly house with white.
Step 3
Using an old toothbrush spatter sides of house using mistletoe and water mixed to an ink consistency.
Step 4
Using a stylus and graphite paper, transfer pattern to house.
Step 5
Basecoat all the fruit and leaves. You won't need to transfer detail lines until this step is completed.
Step 6
Basecoat as follows:
Apples and cherries: Country Apple
Pear: Lemon Meringue
Peach: Ginger
Grapes: Royal Purple
Berries: Royal Purple (paint a messy circle, not a uniform one, as light dots will be placed over the dark circle to form berries.)
Blossoms: White (a light wash of Holland Rose in center of each petal. Be sure to keep this very light while pulling upwards.)
Stems: Russett
Leaves: Avacado Green
Step 7
Using graphite paper, trace in detail lines very lightly.
Step 8
Shade and highlight all leaves first. Shade dark areas and shadows with Black Forest. Highlight lighter areas with Irish Cream. Rouge in areas of leaf with Roseberry and Melon to give a contrast of color.
Step 9
Shade and shadow with a float of Roseberry on blossoms and buds. Outline all blossoms with Roseberry. Centers are formed by stippling with Irish Cream. Draw in lines for stamens with the liner brush using Artichoke. Using stylus or tip of brush, place dots randomly with Country Apple and Carrot Cake at or near the stamen ends.
Step 10
Shade apple using Russett. Place highlight of apple with Brightest Yellow. Next to where stem will form, place a tiny float of Irish Cream.
Step 11
Shade pear using Black Forest float behind Peach. Highlight with Irish Cream and Lemon Meringue. Place a little Melon for color on the pear.
Step 12
Shade peach using Buttercup and Melon. Highlight with Lemon Meringue. Do a pitty-pat motion to place color as a rouge on peach and pear. Center line of peach is done with Russett.
Step 13
Shade cherries with Russett. Place White comma stroke on light side of cherry for highlight.
Step 14
To define each single grape, place a float of Black under and behind each one. Highlight by placing a wash of Pansy over each single grape. Then place a White dot in center of each grape. Place a comma stroke at the bottom of each grape with White. Using Victorian Blue, place a very thin wash over entire cluster of grapes. This will bring out a blueish shade to the grapes.
Step 15
Berries are made by using the end of the paint brush or stylus with Pansy. The dots are placed in a row from top to bottom in the center of the Royal Purple base. Then fill in with other dots around the center row. Do a few dots to the light side of the berry with Roseberry. Outline all dots with Black. Float in Black as done on grapes to give depth. Place a small White highlight spot on the top of each dot. Do a wash of Victorian Blue over Purple dots and Bordeaux over the Roseberry dots.
Step 16
Outline stems using liner brush with Dark Chocolate. Add a line in center of stem to make highlight with Cobblestone.
Step 17
Make tendrils or squiggles with a liner using Russet thinned with water. Outline leaves and place veins with Black Forest Green. Outline pear with Russett.
Step 18
Sponge roof using Roseberry, Holland Rose, White, and Bordeaux.
Step 19
Sponge edge of base with Irish Cream and Avacado Green.
Step 20
Allow to dry and spray with porcelain mist.
